Incorrect fuel mixture due to: a. incorrectly adjusted fuel mixture screws, b. incorrect float level, or c. dirt in carburetor. 1. Oil viscosity too light or oil is diluted. 2. Crankcase breather valve is dirty or defective. 3. Oil leaks. 4. Excessive engine wear. 5. Light loading.
    Fix: 1a. Clean governor linkage. 2. Adjust governor speed and sensitivity. 3. Replace governor spring. 4a. Adjust carburetor main and idle adjustment screws. 4b. Adjust carburetor float level. 4c. Disassemble carburetor and clean all internal passages. 1. Drain oil and refill with correct viscosity oil. 2. Clean crankcase breather and replace if defective. 3.   • Black Exhaust
    Cause: 1. Restricted airflow due to dirt or debris blocking air inlet or outlet 2. Dirt or oil covering engine cooling tins. 3. Incorrect ignition timing.
    Fix: 1. Clear away any debris that may restrict airflow to set Do not use compartment for storage area. 2. Clean away all dirt and oil from engine cooling tins. 3. Adjust distributor.
  • Voltage is unsteady but engine is not misfiring
    Cause: Speed too low, Poor commutation or brush contact, Loose connections, Fluctuating load
    Fix: Adjust governor to correct speed, Refinish commutator or undercut if necessary. See that brushes seat well on commutator and collector rings, are free in holders, are not worn shorter than 1/2 inch, and have good spring tension, Tighten connections, Correct any abnormal load condition causing trouble.
  • VOLTAGE DROPS UNDER HEAVY LOAD (CONT)
    Cause: Faulty carburetion, Dirty carburetor air cleaner, Choke partially closed. Carbon in cylinders or in carburetor venturi. Restricted exhaust line, Improper governor adjustment.
    Fix: Check the fuel system. Clean, adjust or repair as needed. Clean and Service. Choke plate must be wide open at operating temperature.
  • VOLTAGE DROPS UNDER HEAVY LOAD
    Cause: Engine lacks power, Poor compression.
    Fix: Tighten cylinder heads and spark plugs. If still not corrected, grind the valves. Replace piston rings if necessary.
  • SHARP METALLIC THUD, ESPECIALLY WHEN COLD ENGINE FIRST STARTED
    Cause: Low oil supply. Oil badly diluted.
    Fix: Add oil. Change if necessary. Drain. Refill with proper oil.
  • SHARP CLICK WHEN CRANKING ENGINE
    Cause: Magneto impulse coupling.
    Fix: Normal condition - should stop as soon as engine starts.
  • PINGING SOUND WHEN ENGINE IS SUDDENLY OR HEAVILY LOADED
    Cause: Remove the carbon. Reset breaker points or retime ignition.
    Fix: Install correct spark plugs. Carbon in cylinders. Spark advanced too far.
  • LIGHT POUNDING KNOCK
    Cause: Loose connecting rod. Low oil supply, Oil badly diluted. Low oil pressure.
