• Wrong timing
  Fix: Retime ignition.
• Worn intake valve stems or guides
  Fix: Replace valves or guides.
• Uneven compression
  Fix: Tighten cylinder head and spark plugs.; If still not corrected, grind valves.; Replace piston rings, if necessary.
• Restricted air cleaner
  Fix: Clean and refill
• Poor compression
  Fix: Tighten cylinder head and spark plugs.; If still not corrected, grind the valves.; Replace piston rings, if necessary.
• Poor choking
  Fix: If plant is cold, adjust choke. If plant is warm, pull up on choke arm momentarily, while cranking
• Plant starts but does not continue to run
  Fix: START button released too soon. Hold in contact longer.; Defective charging generator. Repair.; Defective panel.equipment. See Controls.
• Pinging sound when engine is rapidly accelerated or heavily loaded
  Fix: Carbon in cylinders. Remove carbon.; Spark too early. Retime ignition.; Wrong spark plugs. Install correct plugs.; Spark plugs burned or carboned. Install new plugs.; Valves hot. Adjust tappet clearance.; Fuel stale or low octane. Use good fresh fuel.; Lean fuel mixture. Clean or adjust carburetor.
• Oil too light
  Fix: Oli badly diluted. Drain, refill with proper oil.; Oil too low. Add oil.; Oil relief valve not seating. Remove and clean, or replace.
• Low oil pressure
  Fix: Drain, refill with proper oil.; Clean all lines and passages.; Remove and clean, or replace.; Replace.; Remove and clean.; Replace.; Replace.; Defective oil pressure gauge. Replace.
• Light pounding knock
  Fix: Loose connecting rod bearing. Replace.; Low oil supply. Add oil.; Low oil pressure. Refer to symptom of low oil pressure for remedies.; Oil badly diluted. Change oil.
• Fouled spark plug
  Fix: Defe ctive or wrong spark plug. Clean and adjust.; Sticking valves, Clean stems and guides.; Broken valve spring. Replace.
• Excessive oil consumption, light blue smoky exhaust
  Fix: Worn piston rings. Install new piston rings.; Oil leaks from engine or connections. Replace gaskets or leaking tubing. Tighten screws and connections.; Oil too light or diluted. Drain, refill with correct oil.; Too large bearing clearance. Replace bearings.; Oil pressure too high. Refer to symptoms of high oil pressure for remedies.; Engine misfires. Clean, adjust, or replace breaker points, plugs, condenser, coil, etc., or retime ignition.
• Excessive choking
  Fix: See that choke opens properly
• Engine will not start when cranked
  Fix: Clean, adjust, or replace breaker points, plugs, condenser, coil, etc. or retime ignition.; Faulty ignition.; Refill the tank. Check the fuel system.; Clean, adjust, or replace parts necessary.; Lack of fuel or faulty carburetion.
