  6. If surging persists, replace bumper spring and adjustment screw.
  7. Recheck fast and slow idle speeds; readjust slow idle if needed.
  8. Check all adjusting screw lock nuts for tightness; install covers.
  9. Connect fuel shut-off cable and speed control rod.
Check and Adjust Valve Clearance adjustment

⚠ Valve clearance MUST BE checked and adjusted with engine COLD.

⚠ To prevent accidental starting, always disconnect NEGATIVE (—) battery terminal.

Tools: JDE83 or JD81-1 Flywheel Turning Tool, JDG1571 or JDE81-4 Timing Pin, Feeler gauge, JDG966 Crankshaft Front/Rear Rotation Adapter

  1. Disconnect NEGATIVE (–) battery terminal. Remove rocker arm cover and crankcase ventilator tube.
  2. Remove plugs from timing/rotation hole and timing pin hole.
  3. Rotate flywheel in running direction until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC compression stroke.

Measure Valve Lift diagnostic

⚠ Measure at 0.00 mm clearance and with engine COLD

Tools: JDG1571 or JDE81-4 Timing Pin, Flywheel turning tool, Dial indicator

  1. Remove rocker arm cover.
  2. Set No. 1 piston at TDC compression and install timing pin.
  3. Set rocker arm-to-valve tip clearance to 0.00 mm for the appropriate valves.
  4. Place dial indicator on top of valve spring cap or rotator; set dial to 0.
  5. Remove timing pin and rotate engine one full revolution (360°).
  6. Record maximum dial reading as valve reaches full open.
  7. Compare to specification; if out of spec, inspect entire valve train and camshaft.
Pressure Testing Cooling System diagnostic

⚠ Explosive release of fluids from pressurized cooling system can cause serious burns. Only remove filler cap when cool enough to touch with bare hands.

Tools: D05104ST Tester

  1. Test radiator cap: remove radiator cap and attach to D05104ST Tester.
  2. Pressurize cap to specification. Gauge should hold pressure for 10 seconds within normal range.
  3. If gauge does not hold pressure, replace radiator cap.
  4. Remove the cap from gauge, turn it 180°, and retest cap.
  5. Test cooling system: allow engine to cool, remove radiator cap, fill radiator with coolant to normal operating level.
  6. Connect gauge and adapter to radiator filler neck and pressurize cooling system to radiator cap specification.
  7. With pressure applied, check all cooling system hose connections, radiator, and overall engine for leaks.
  8. If leakage is detected, correct and pressure test again.
