Procedures

12
Engine Lifting installation

⚠ Never bend the eyebolts and the brackets. Only load the eyebolts and the brackets under tension.

Tools: Hoist, Adjustable lifting beam

  1. Use a hoist and an adjustable lifting beam to lift the engine.
  2. Keep all supporting members (chains and cables) parallel and perpendicular to the top of the load.
  3. Use only the lifting eyes that are on the engine to remove the engine.
Adding the SCA to Heavy-Duty Coolant at the Initial Fill maintenance
  1. Use equation V × 0.045 = X to determine amount of Perkins SCA required.
  2. V is total volume of cooling system. X is amount of SCA required.
Adding the SCA to Heavy-Duty Coolant for Maintenance maintenance
  1. Test antifreeze periodically for concentration of SCA.
  2. Use equation V × 0.014 = X to determine amount of Perkins SCA required.
  3. V is total volume of cooling system. X is amount of SCA required.
Aftercooler Core - Clean/Test maintenance

⚠ Personal injury can result from air pressure. Wear protective face shield and clothing.

Tools: light bulb

  1. Remove core. Refer to OEM information for correct procedure.
  2. Turn aftercooler core upside-down to remove debris.
  3. Use pressurized air to remove loose debris. Direct air opposite to fan airflow. Hold nozzle approximately 6 mm from fins. Move parallel with tubes.
  4. Pressurized water may be used. Maximum water pressure less than 275 kPa. Use to soften mud. Clean core from both sides.
  5. Back flush core with suitable cleaner.
  6. Clean core with steam to remove residue. Flush fins of aftercooler core.
  7. Wash core with hot, soapy water. Rinse core thoroughly with clean water.
  8. Dry core with compressed air. Direct air in reverse direction of normal flow.
  9. Inspect core for cleanliness. Pressure test core. Repair if necessary.
  10. Install core. Refer to OEM information.
  11. Start engine and accelerate to high idle. Stop engine. Use light bulb behind core to inspect cleanliness. Repeat if necessary.
Battery - Replace maintenance

⚠ Batteries give off combustible gases which can explode.

⚠ The battery cover should be removed before any servicing is attempted.

  1. Switch engine to OFF position. Remove all electrical loads.
  2. Turn off any battery chargers. Disconnect any battery chargers.
  3. Disconnect NEGATIVE '-' cable from NEGATIVE '-' battery terminal.
  4. Disconnect POSITIVE '+' cable from POSITIVE '+' battery terminal.
  5. Remove used battery.
  6. Install new battery.
  7. Connect cable from starting motor to POSITIVE '+' battery terminal.
  8. Connect NEGATIVE '-' cable to NEGATIVE '-' battery terminal.
Battery Electrolyte Level - Check maintenance

⚠ All lead-acid batteries contain sulfuric acid which can burn the skin and clothing

⚠ Always wear a face shield and protective clothing

Tools: 245-5829 Coolant Battery Tester Refractometer, 5N-5561 Silicone Lubricant

  1. Remove the filler caps; maintain electrolyte level to the FULL mark.
  2. Use distilled water; if unavailable use clean water low in minerals.
  3. Check the condition of the electrolyte with the 245-5829 Coolant Battery Tester Refractometer.
  4. Clean the battery case with baking soda solution or ammonium hydroxide; rinse with clean water.
  5. Clean terminals and cable clamps with fine grade sandpaper.
  6. Coat clamps and terminals with 5N-5561 Silicone Lubricant, petroleum jelly or MPGM.
Battery or Battery Cable - Disconnect maintenance

Tools: fine grade sandpaper

  1. Turn start switch to OFF. Turn ignition switch to OFF and remove key and all electrical loads.
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Ensure cable cannot contact terminal. When four 12 volt batteries are involved, two negative connections must be disconnected.
  3. Remove positive connection.
  4. Clean all disconnected connections and battery terminals.
  5. Use fine grade sandpaper to clean terminals and cable clamps until bright. Do not remove material excessively. Coat with silicone lubricant or petroleum jelly.
  6. Tape cable connections to help prevent accidental starting.
  7. Proceed with necessary system repairs.
  8. To connect battery, connect positive connection before negative connection.
Belts - Inspect/Adjust/Replace maintenance

Tools: Burroughs gauge, torque wrench

  1. Inspect belts for wear and cracking. Replace worn or damaged belts.
  2. For multiple drive belts, replace belts in matched sets.
  3. Use a Burroughs gauge at center of longest free length to check tension.
  4. Correct tension is 535 N (120 lb). If below 250 N (56 lb), adjust to 535 N.
  5. To adjust, loosen alternator pivot bolt and link bolt.
  6. Move alternator to increase or decrease belt tension.
  7. Tighten alternator pivot bolt and link bolt to 22 N·m.
  8. For replacement, refer to Disassembly and Assembly.
Changing to Perkins ELC maintenance

⚠ Incorrect or incomplete flushing of cooling system can result in damage to copper and other metal components.

Tools: suitable container

  1. Drain coolant into suitable container.
  2. Dispose of coolant according to local regulations.
  3. Flush system with clean water to remove any debris.
  4. Use Perkins cleaner to clean system. Follow instruction on label.
  5. Drain cleaner into suitable container. Flush cooling system with clean water.
  6. Fill cooling system with clean water and operate engine until warmed to 49° to 66°C.
  7. Drain cooling system into suitable container and flush cooling system with clean water.
  8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until system is completely clean.
  9. Fill cooling system with Perkins Premixed ELC.
Coolant (Commercial Heavy-Duty) - Change maintenance

⚠ Pressurized System: Hot coolant can cause serious burns.

⚠ Allow engine to cool before opening filler cap.

Tools: suitable container, pressurizing pump

  1. Stop engine and allow to cool. Loosen filler cap slowly to relieve pressure. Remove cap.
  2. Open drain cock or remove drain plug on engine and radiator. Allow coolant to drain.
  3. Flush cooling system with clean water to remove debris.
  4. Close drain cock or install drain plugs on engine and radiator.
  5. Fill cooling system with clean water. Install cooling system filler cap.
  6. Start and run engine at low idle until temperature reaches 49 to 66 °C.
  7. Stop engine and allow to cool. Loosen cap slowly and remove. Drain water. Flush with clean water.
