FPT Serial & Model Number Guide

Every FPT engine carries a model/serial label. Here is where to find it, what each part of the number means, and how to use it for parts, service and age.

Where to find it: the engine's identification plate, which carries the full model designation (e.g. C13 500).

What the number means

Worked example — C13 500:

13Approximate displacement classRoughly tracks displacement in liters (FPT's own marine data sheet lists the C13 500's actual displacement as 12.9 L), not an exact figure.
500Power ratingThe engine's continuous/heavy-duty (Class D) horsepower rating, per FPT's own rating table — a lower Class C rating for the same physical engine (e.g. 520 HP) is not reflected in the model name.

Using the serial number

FPT also publishes a general engine-code legend confirmed on official data sheets: arrangement (L = in-line, V = 90° V), turbocharger (WG = wastegate, VGT = variable geometry, TST = twin-stage), air handling (NA = naturally aspirated, TC = turbocharged, TCA = turbocharged + aftercooled), injection (M = mechanical, ECR = electronic common rail, EUI = electronic unit injector, MPI = multi-point injection), and exhaust (EGR, SCR). None of this confirms what "TE" means (seen in our corpus, e.g. C10 TE 1D) — that suffix remains undecoded by any source found. No public serial-to-build-date formula was found.
