Deutz Serial & Model Number Guide

Every Deutz engine carries a model/serial label. Here is where to find it, what each part of the number means, and how to use it for parts, service and age.

Where to find it: the engine's identification tag — DEUTZ engine serial numbers may be located in two places on the engine (commonly the valve cover, though the exact spot varies by model). Do not confuse this with the separate EPA emissions tag on the same engine — the EPA tag does not carry the engine serial number you need for parts.

What the number means

Worked example — BF4L914:

Part	Meaning	Detail
`B`	Turbo	Indicates turbocharging.
`F`	Engine type	Highspeed, compact engine.
`4`	Number of cylinders	Cylinder count.
`L`	Cooling	Air-cooled, in this F-prefixed compact-engine family (in D-prefixed engines without the F, L instead denotes an in-line cylinder arrangement — the letter's meaning is family-dependent, per the same source).
`914`	Engine family	The 914 family (other Deutz families in our corpus include 1012/1013 and 2012/2013, liquid-cooled M-suffix variants, e.g. BF6M2012).

Using the serial number

Other confirmed trailing letters seen across Deutz families: W = indirect-injected for underground operation, T = long-stroke, R = in-line configurator, C = charge air-cooled, P = high-output version, a trailing F = further-developed variant. Deutz's own site (deutz.com) does not publish this key publicly; it comes from a dealer's serial-number cross-reference guide. No public serial-to-build-date formula was found.
