Wisconsin — Main Bearing Plate and Crankshaft Removal and Installation

Before you start

  • Caution: It will be necessary to rotate the crankshaft so that counterweights clear the center main bearing hanger lugs in crankcase

Procedure

  1. Remove main bearing plate, gaskets and shims from take-off end of engine
  2. Slip a length of pipe over the gear end of the crankshaft
  3. With the assistance of another person, withdraw the shaft through the main bearing plate opening
  4. Ensure crankshaft counterweights clear the center main bearing hanger lugs in crankcase during removal
  5. In reassembly: assemble main bearing plate, gaskets and shims
  6. Torque capscrews to 32 foot pounds
  7. Check end play and add or remove gaskets to give the necessary .002 to .005 inch movement with engine cold

  • pipe (length over gear end)
