Before you start

  • Caution: Do not attempt to remove crankshaft from engine without first removing center bearing hanger

Procedure

  1. Disconnect oil pressure line at center bearing hanger and at oil header behind filter using a 1/2 inch hex tubing nut wrench
  2. Remove hanger to case screws and washers
  3. Loosen and back out cap to hanger screws about 1/2 inch
  4. Tap screw heads lightly and alternately with a hammer to break cap away from hanger body
  5. Do not pry cap and body apart. Separate and remove hanger and cap with shell bearing from crankcase
  6. Check bearing and crankshaft journal for visible wear against Clearance Chart
  7. If clearance approaches .005 inch, replace shell bearing with suitable undersize
  8. In reassembly: clean thoroughly and apply a film of oil to bearing surfaces
  9. Mount center main bearing after crankshaft is assembled to crankcase and end play is set
  10. Ensure dowel pins in cap are positioned so locating lug on both bearing halves is on the same side
  11. Assemble hanger so that 45° oil line elbow is facing toward oil header side of case
  12. Draw cap to hanger screws finger tight until the two dowels are just entering holes
  13. With a hand wrench, alternately turn each screw 1/2 to 3/4 turns to evenly pull cap tight to hanger body
  14. Torque screws 32 to 35 foot pounds
  15. For V465D engines after SN 6279801, torque the two bolts which fasten the center main bearing assembly to the crankcase to 74-76 LB-FT
  16. Secure bearing hanger to crankcase after crankshaft end play is set
  17. Install capscrews and washers
  18. Ensure oil fitting passages are clean
  19. Connect oil line from header to bearing hanger
