Procedure

  1. 1. Check that the auxiliary batteries are connected
  2. (series or parallel) so that the rated voltage cor-
  3. responds to the engine system voltage.
  4. 2. First connect the red (+) jumper cable to the
  5. auxiliary battery, then to the flat battery. Then
  6. connect the black jumper cable (–) to the auxil-
  7. iary battery, and lastly to a place some distance
  8. from the flat batteries, such as the negative
  9. cable by the main switch or the negative cable
  10. connection on the starter motor.
  11. 3. Start the engine.
  12. WARNING! Do not move the connections when
  13. you attempt to start the engine (risk of arcing),
  14. and do not stand and lean over one of the bat-
  15. teries.
  16. 4. Remove the jumper cables in the reverse order
  17. from installation.
  18. WARNING! The ordinary cables to the standard
  19. batteries must not be loosened on any condi-
  20. tion.

  23. Operation
  24. Correct operation technique is very important for both fuel economy and engine life. Always let the engine warm
  25. up to normal operating temperature before operating at full power. Avoid sudden throttle openings and operation
  26. at high engine speeds.
  27. Checking instruments
  28. Check all instruments directly after starting, and then
  29. regularly during operation.
  30. IMPORTANT! The lubrication oil level must be
  31. checked every 8 hours on engines which oper-
  32. ate continuously. Please refer to the “Mainte-
  33. nance, lubrication system” chapter:
  34. Fault indication
  35. If the EDC4 system receives abnormal signals from
  36. the engine, the “Diagnostic lamp” will start to flash. By
  37. pressing the “Diagnostic button”, a fault code can be
  38. received which can guide fault tracing (or a fault code
  39. can be received via the CAN network).

  42. Effect on engine
  43. The diagnostic function affects the engine in the fol-
  44. lowing ways:
  45. 1. The diagnostic function has discovered a minor
  46. malfunction which does not damage the engine.
  47. Reaction: The engine is not affected. The diag-
  48. nostic lamp lights up.
  49. 2. The diagnostic function has discovered a serious
  50. malfunction which will not immediately damage
  51. the engine (e.g. high coolant temperature):
  52. Reaction: The engine goes into “limp home”
  53. mode. The diagnostic lamp lights up.
  54. 3. The diagnostic function has discovered a serious
  55. malfunction which makes it impossible to control
  56. the engine.
  57. Reaction: The diagnostic lamp starts to flash.
  58. Engine is shut off.
  59. Engine speed control
  60. Avoid sudden and violent throttle opening.
  61. Operation at low load
  62. Avoid long-term operation at idle or at low load, since
  63. this can lead to increased oil consumption and even-
  64. tually to oil leakage from the exhaust manifold, since
  65. oil will seep past the turbocharger seals and accom-
  66. pany the induction air into the inlet manifold at low
  67. turbo boost pressure.
  68. One consequence of this is that carbon builds up on
  69. valves, piston crowns, exhaust ports and the exhaust
  70. turbine.
  71. At low load, the combustion temperature is so low
  72. that full combustion of the fuel can not be ensured,
  73. which means that the lubrication oil can be diluted by
  74. diesel fuel, and the exhaust manifold will eventually
  75. leak oil.
  76. If the following points are done as a complement
  77. to normal maintenance, there will be no risk of
  78. malfunctions caused by operation at low load.
  79. • Reduce operation at low load to a minimum. If
  80. the engine is regularly test run without load once
  81. a week, operation duration should be limited to 5
  82. minutes.
  83. • Run the engine at full load for about 4 hours once
  84. a year. This gives carbon deposits in the engine
  85. and the exhaust pipe a chance to be burned
  86. away.
