Procedure

  1. 1. Engine model
  2. 2. Engine specification number
  3. 3. Engine series number (10 digits)
  4. 4. Engine power, peak, without fan
  5. 5. Engine speed
  6. 6. Injection advance and type of camshaft
  7. 7. Manufacturer’s identification code
  8. 8. Indication of standard and/or specification
  9. 9. Air temperature in °C (°F), in accordance with
  10. ISO 3046
  11. 10. Altitude above mean sea level, in accordance
  12. with ISO 3046

  14. 12. Piston class
  15. 13. Extra information
  16. Location of engine signs
  17. The engines are supplied with two engine signs, of
  18. which one is installed on the right side of the engine
  19. block.

  24. EDC 4
  25. EDC 4 (Electronic Diesel Control) and is an electronic system with CAN (Controller Area Network) or poten-
  26. tiometer communication for diesel engine control. The system includes fuel management and diagnostic func-
  27. tions.
  28. Diagnostic function
  29. The task of the diagnostic function is to discover
  30. and localize any malfunctions in the EDC 4 system,
  31. to protect the engine and to ensure operation in the
  32. event of serious malfunctions.
  33. If a malfunction is discovered, this is notified by the
  34. diagnostic function, by warning lamps or via the
  35. CAN network. By pressing the diagnostic switch, the
  36. operator will receive a fault code as a guide for any
  37. fault-tracing. Fault codes can also be output via the
  38. CAN interface or with Volvo’s VODIA tool (including
  39. the Penta EDC4 software) at an authorized Volvo
  40. Penta workshop.
  41. If there is a serious malfunction, the engine is shut
  42. down altogether. Yet again, fault codes can be output
  43. via diagnostic connector, the CAN interface or with
  44. Volvo’s VODIA tool (including the Penta EDC4 soft-
  45. ware) at an authorized Volvo Penta workshop.
  46. Summary
  47. The system includes sensors, control unit and an en-
  48. gine speed regulator. The sensors send input signals
  49. to the control unit, which controls the control rod for
  50. the injection pumps in its turn, by means of an actua-
  51. tor in the engine speed regulator.
  52. Input signals
  53. The control unit receives input signals about engine
  54. operating conditions from the following components:
  55. speed sensor, camshaft
  56. coolant temperature sensor
  57. charge pressure sensor
  58. oil pressure sensor
  59. fuel temperature sensor
  60. coolant level sensor (the function is implemented
  61. in the control unit as standard, but no sensor is
  62. supplied with the engine as a standard feature)
  63. Output signals
  64. The control unit controls the following components on
  65. the basis of the input signals received:
  66. engine speed regulator (with position sensor for
  67. the control rod and acutator)
  68. electric air pre-heating (option)
  69. Information from the sensors provides exact informa-
  70. tion about current operation conditions and allows the
  71. processor to calculate the correct fuel volume, check
  72. engine status etc.

  75. Instruments
  76. The engines are not supplied with instruments and
  77. controls. The choice of instrument type and controls
  78. is made by the customer.

  81. B. CAN interface SAE J 1939
  82. C. VODIA input
  83. D. Droop contact
  84. E. 1500 / 1800 rpm switch
  85. F. Diagnostic button
  86. G. Tachometer
  87. H. Warning lamp, oil pressure
  88. J. Diagnostic lamp
  89. K. Warning lamp, high coolant temperature
  90. L. Fuse 15 A
