Before you start

  • Do not use the actuator rod of the wastegate (16) to lift the turbocharger.
  • Do not use any sealant on gasket (14).
  • Do not use oil or grease to install the air inlet hose; use a solution of water and 5% soap.

Procedure

  1. Remove all plastic plugs from the ports of turbocharger (1). Clean mating surfaces of exhaust manifold, turbocharger, oil supply tube (6) and oil drain tube (9).
  2. Ensure inlet and outlet ports are clean and free from restrictions. The turbocharger shaft must rotate freely.
  3. If studs (15) were removed, install them into the exhaust manifold. Install a new gasket (14) over studs (15).
  4. Position turbocharger (1) onto the exhaust manifold.
  5. Install nuts (13). Tighten to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
  6. Lubricate the bearing housing of turbocharger (1) with clean engine oil.
  7. Inspect oil hose assemblies (6 and 9). Replace if necessary.
  8. Position new joint (10) and oil drain tube (9) onto turbocharger bottom. Install 6 mm setscrews (8). Tighten to 9 N·m (80 lb in).
  9. Position new joint and oil drain tube (9) onto cylinder block. Tighten 8 mm setscrews (11) to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).
  10. Position new washers (7) and oil supply tube (6) onto turbocharger (1). Install banjo bolt (5). Tighten to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).
  11. Install new washers and oil supply tube (6) to the cylinder block. Tighten banjo bolt to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).
  12. If studs (12) were removed, install them into the turbocharger housing.
  13. Position exhaust adapter (3) onto studs (12). Install nuts (2). Do not tighten at this time.
  14. Tighten the three nuts finger tight in sequence (17), (18), (19). Tighten in the same sequence to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
  15. Position air inlet hose on the compressor housing. Install hose clamps. Tighten to 5 N·m (44 lb in).
