Procedure

  1. Fasten a temporary pointer to the timing case cover with its tip near the outer edge of the crankshaft pulley or damper.
  2. Remove the rocker cover.
  3. Turn the crankshaft clockwise from the front until the push rod for the inlet valve of the rear cylinder just tightens.
  4. Remove the front rocker lever and remove the valve springs from the front valve with the valve spring compressor.
  5. Fit a collar near the top of the valve to hold it if the crankshaft is turned too far.
  6. Fasten a dial test indicator with its plunger on the top of the valve stem.
  7. Turn the crankshaft slowly clockwise until the dial gauge pointer just stops; mark the pulley.
  8. Continue turning in the same direction until the pointer just begins to move counter-clockwise; mark the pulley.
  9. Mark the centre point between the two marks and remove the other two marks.
  10. Turn the crankshaft approximately 45 deg counter-clockwise then clockwise until the mark aligns with the pointer.
