Before you start

  • Ensure that the piston comes lightly into contact with the piston position probe, or both the piston and the probe could be damaged.
  • If the plastic pin is not put into the cap correctly, damage could occur to the fuel injection pump.

Procedure

  1. Remove the rocker cover, see Operation 3-1.
  2. Loosen the setscrews which retain the atomisers.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise from the front until the push rod for the number 1 inlet valve just releases.
  4. Remove the atomiser from number 1 cylinder with its seat washer and fit the piston position probe 21825630 or 21825947.
  5. Fit the atomiser clamp to the probe and tighten the setscrews gradually and evenly.
  6. Remove the cap (A5) and washer from the timing attachment; fit the probe (A4) of timing light KJ37007 and switch it ON.
  7. Connect the earth cable to the engine in a place with a good earth connection.
  8. Very carefully rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the piston just comes into contact with the piston position probe.
  9. The timing is correct when the two lamps on the timing light are illuminated.
  10. If both lamps are not illuminated, adjust the fuel injection pump hub until both lamps illuminate; tighten cap screws to 35 Nm.
  11. Rotate the crankshaft counter-clockwise to move the piston away from the probe and repeat steps six and seven.
  12. Press the switch to OFF, disconnect the earth cable, remove the probe and the timing light.
  13. Check that the brass end of the plastic pin can be seen in the cap; fit the cap together with a new washer.
  14. Remove the piston position probe; fit the atomiser with a new seat washer and tighten setscrews to 12 Nm.
  15. Fit the gear cover with a new joint; apply sealant to the setscrew threads and tighten the setscrews. Fit the rocker cover.
