Perkins — Camshaft - Remove and Install

For these Perkins models: 1103, 1103 Engine, 1104, 1104 Engine, 1104 Turbocharged Engine, SEBU7833-01.

Applies to: Perkins 1104

Before you start

  • NOTICE: Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
  • NOTICE: Do not damage the lobes or the bearings when the camshaft is removed or installed.
  • Note: Ensure that the camshaft (3) is clean. Lubricate the camshaft (3) with clean engine oil prior to installation.

Procedure

  1. Start By: a. Remove the cylinder head if the cylinder head has not previously been removed. b. Remove the front housing if the front housing has not previously been removed.
  2. Removal 1. Turn the engine upside-down so that the cam followers are held in a position away from the camshaft.
  3. Removal 2. Remove the thrust washer (1) if the thrust washer has not previously been removed. Make a note of the location of the hollow dowel (2) for installation purposes.
  4. Removal 3. Carefully remove the camshaft (3) from the cylinder block.
  5. Installation 1. Carefully install the camshaft (3) into the cylinder block.
  6. Installation 2. Put the thrust washer (1) in position if this is the appropriate time. Make sure that the thrust washer (1) is aligned with the hollow dowel (2).
  7. End By: a. Install the front housing if this is the appropriate time. b. Install the cylinder head if this is the appropriate time.
