Perkins 1506 — Turbocharger - Inspect - Cleaning and Inspecting

Maintenance

For the Perkins 1506, from the Perkins owner's manual.

Applies to: Perkins 1506A engine, Perkins 1506C engine, Perkins 1506D engine

Before you start

  • Turbocharger bearing failures can cause large quantities of oil to enter the air inlet and exhaust systems.

Procedure

  1. Remove exhaust outlet piping and air inlet piping; visually inspect piping for oil and clean interior.
  2. Turn compressor wheel and turbine wheel by hand; assembly should turn freely with no visible contact.
  3. Check the compressor wheel for cleanliness; oil on back side may indicate a failed turbocharger oil seal.
  4. Use a dial indicator to check the end clearance on the shaft; if end play exceeds Service Manual specifications, repair or replace.
  5. Inspect the bore of the turbine housing for corrosion.
  6. Clean the turbocharger housing with standard shop solvents and a soft bristle brush.
  7. Fasten the air inlet piping and exhaust outlet piping to the turbocharger housing.
