Northern Lights 984K / M984 — Starting the engine

Operation · Series 4 control panel

For the Northern Lights 984K / M984, from the Northern Lights operator's manual.

Applies to: Northern Lights M984, Northern Lights 984K engine

Before you start

  • Excessive cranking on marine sets with a water lift muffler can cause engine damage by filling the muffler with water and backfilling the exhaust line and engine.

Procedure

  1. Hold the Shutdown Bypass switch in the ON position.
  2. While holding the bypass switch ON, push the Engine Control switch to START.
  3. Release both switches as soon as the engine starts.
  4. Do not crank the starter for more than 20 seconds consecutively.
  5. If it fails to start, be sure the engine has stopped completely before re-engaging the starter.
  6. After 3 consecutive 20-second cranks, remove the impeller from the seawater pump.
  7. Once the engine starts, shut it off immediately and reinstall the impeller; restart and check the exhaust overboard outlet for gushes of water.
