Before you start

  • If defects such as cuts or surface separations are found, replace the V-belt.
  • Keep oil and grease away from the belt.
  • Excessive V-belt tension can cause rapid wear of the alternator bearing.

Procedure

  1. Inspect V-belt for defects such as wear, cuts or surface separations; replace if defective.
  2. Push the belt downward with 49 ± 5 N force midway between pulleys.
  3. Compare deflection with 7 ± 1 mm for new belt and 9 ± 1 mm for retightening.
  4. Loosen all retaining bolts of the applicable tension pulley bracket.
  5. Loosen the lock nuts of the adjusting bolt.
  6. Turn the adjusting bolts to adjust belt tension.
  7. Tighten the lock nut of the adjusting bolt.
  8. Tighten all the retaining bolts of the bracket.

Specs & values

  • Deflection 7 ± 1 mm [0.28 ± 0.04 in.] new belt; 9 ± 1 mm [0.35 ± 0.04 in.] retightening at 49 ± 5 N [5 ± 0.5 kgf]
