Procedure

  1. Put socket (58309-73100) to crankshaft pulley, turn crankshaft in normal direction (clockwise viewed from front).
  2. Stop cranking when timing mark '0' on crankshaft pulley is aligned with pointer.
  3. Move inlet and exhaust valve rocker arms for No. 1 cylinder to verify they are not pushed by pushrods.
  4. Remove delivery valve holder from No. 1 pumping element; take out delivery valve, spring and stopper; restore holder.
  5. Attach a spare injection pipe to No. 1 pumping element with its free end held downward.
  6. Turn crankshaft to bring No. 1 piston to about 60° before TDC on compression stroke.
  7. Operate priming pump; crank engine in normal direction; reduce speed when fuel just starts to stop flowing.
  8. Stop cranking when fuel stops flowing; check timing mark on crankshaft pulley is aligned with pointer.
  9. To adjust: if timing is advanced, tilt injection pump toward crankcase; if retarded, tilt pump away from crankcase.
