Maintenance · Cooling system

From a Mitsubishi operator's manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Applies to: Mitsubishi S16R-Y1PTA-2 engine

Before you start

  • Remove the radiator cap only after the engine is cooled to room temperature.
  • Coolant containing LLC is toxic; never dispose of it into regular sewage.

Procedure

  1. When draining immediately after operation, idle at low idling speed for 5 to 6 minutes to lower coolant temperature to 70 to 80 deg C.
  2. Open the radiator cap.
  3. Place coolant receiving cans under the drain cocks on the engine and water pump, and open the drain cocks.
  4. Close drain cocks and plugs.
  5. Pour non-corrosive cleaning solution into the cooling system, operate at 800 to 900 min-1 for about 15 minutes, then drain.
  6. Pour fresh water, operate at 800 to 900 min-1 for about 10 minutes, and repeat rinsing until draining water is clean.
  7. Pour in undiluted LLC, then water slowly to the full level, and close the radiator cap securely.
  8. Shut off fuel and crank the engine about 10 seconds; wait about 1 minute and repeat to remove air from the water pump.
