Mitsubishi — Checking V-belt and adjusting belt tension

Adjustments · V-belt / alternator

From a Mitsubishi operator's manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Applies to: Mitsubishi S16R-Y1PTA-2 engine

Before you start

  • Keep oil and grease away from the belt.
  • Excessive V-belt tension can cause rapid wear of the alternator bearing.

Procedure

  1. Inspect V-belt for wear, cuts or surface separations; replace with a new belt if defective.
  2. Push the belt downward with about 49 +/- 5 N midway between pulleys; deflection should be 7 +/- 1 mm for new belt and 9 +/- 1 mm for retightening.
  3. Remove the alternator front cover and V-belt cover.
  4. Loosen all the retaining bolts on the alternator and adjusting rod.
  5. Loosen the upper and lower lock nuts on the adjusting rod (the lower nut has left-hand threads).
  6. Turn the adjusting rod to adjust V-belt tension, then tighten the upper and lower lock nuts.
  7. Tighten all the retaining bolts and reinstall the belt cover and alternator front cover.
