Marathon — Starting Up the Generator Set

Operation

From a Marathon service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Permanent equipment damage can be caused by idling the engine between 650 and 1400 generator RPM.
  • Remove regulator fuses before engine start-up and adjustment when idling is required.
  • Do not leave the battery connected after flashing; observe proper polarity.

Procedure

  1. Disconnect generator output from the load. Open the circuit breaker.
  2. Start the prime mover and adjust to proper speed (1800 RPM for 60 Hz, 1500 RPM for 50 Hz).
  3. Adjust voltage to required value with the rheostat in the voltage regulator.
  4. If no voltage is produced, flash the field by applying battery voltage to the regulator output terminals while at a standstill.
  5. Close the circuit breaker and apply the load.
  6. Before stopping the engine, trip the circuit breaker.

Specs & values

  • 1800 RPM for 60 Hz
  • 1500 RPM for 50 Hz
