Marathon — Drying Out

Maintenance · generator windings

From a Marathon service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Procedure

  1. If possible place machine in oven and bake at temperature not to exceed 90 degrees C (194 degrees F).
  2. Or enclose generator with a covering, insert heating units and leave a hole at top to let moisture escape.
  3. Or pass low-voltage current through field or stator windings, not exceeding 85 degrees C (185 degrees F), with machine at rest.
  4. Take insulation resistance tests every three or four hours until a fairly constant value is obtained.
  5. Drying out may take as long as 72 hours.
