Before you start

  • Do not puncture the secondary wires with a probe when setting ignition timing

Procedure

  2. Disconnect the vacuum line and plug the disconnected vacuum line
  3. Connect a timing light to the No. 1 cylinder spark plug wire; connect a tachometer
  4. Start engine and reduce idle speed to 600 rpm to be sure the centrifugal advance is not operating
  5. Adjust the initial ignition timing to specifications by rotating the distributor
  6. Check the centrifugal advance by accelerating to approximately 2000 rpm
  7. Unplug the vacuum line, connect it, and accelerate to approximately 2000 rpm; advance should begin sooner and advance farther
  8. If the vacuum advance is not functioning properly, remove the distributor and check it on a distributor tester; replace the diaphragm unit if out of calibration
