Before you start

  • Let the engine cool before removing the radiator cap
  • Place a cloth over the cap and rotate slowly counterclockwise to the safety stop to allow pressure to escape

Procedure

  1. Shut the engine off and let the engine cool before removing the radiator cap
  2. Adjust the radiator coolant (fill or drain) to one inch below the filler neck opening before testing
  3. Wet the rubber sealing surface of the cap before installing the cap tightly on the radiator
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the engine temperature sending unit and remove the sending unit
  5. Install the adapter fitting from the Rotunda Pressure Tester 21-0012 into the intake manifold or cylinder head in place of the sending unit
  6. Insert the free end of the radiator overflow hose into a container of water
  7. Attach the pressure pump and gauge and pressurize the cooling system to the cap lower limit
  8. Gradually increase system pressure until a slight stream of bubbles appears; this is the upper limit of the pressure cap
  9. Pressurize the system and observe the gauge reading for approximately two minutes; pressure should not drop
