Before you start

  • Qualified electrical personnel must conduct these tests. Lethal voltage may be present at both the generator and voltage regulator terminals.

Procedure

  1. Disconnect generator output from load; main circuit breaker or fused disconnect open.
  2. Open input power to the automatic voltage regulator; remove fuse or disconnect and insulate one regulator input power lead.
  3. Verify all prime mover start-up procedures have been followed.
  4. If equipped with space heaters, ensure they are de-energized.
  5. Start the prime mover and adjust for proper speed per generator nameplate.
  6. Check all line-to-line and line-to-neutral voltages for balance; shut down and reconnect regulator if balanced.
  7. Start the set; adjust terminal voltage with regulator voltage adjustment and adjust stability if equipped.
  8. Record no load excitation (DC voltage to exciter stator), terminal voltage and driver speed as benchmark.
  9. Close the main circuit breaker to the load.
  10. Monitor generator output current to verify at or below nameplate value.
  11. Check generator speed (frequency) under load and adjust as necessary.
