Before you start

  • Complete entire series of checks before performing any repair.
  • Replace any components which do not have the resistance readings indicated.

Procedure

  1. Disconnect and identify armature leads (item 9) and field leads (item 8).
  2. Remove nuts from diodes D5 and D6; pull diodes away from printed circuit board, leaving soldered connection intact.
  3. Visually inspect for discoloration or visible damage to large power resistors (item 7) and PCB rings.
  4. With ohmmeter R x 1, check resistances across diodes (items 1 and 2); very high one direction, approximately mid-scale other.
  5. With ohmmeter R x 1000, check resistance across rectangular white resistors (item 4); reading other than open.
  6. With ohmmeter R x 1, check resistance across large power resistors (item 7); reading other than open.
  7. With ohmmeter R x 1, measure resistance across small resistors with colored bands (item 6); reading other than open.
  8. With ohmmeter R x 1, check zener diodes (item 5); approximately mid-scale one direction, very high other.
  9. Check SCR with R x 1: very high one direction, lower other; jumper positive meter lead to small SCR lead should read mid-scale.
