Before you start

  • If new field coil assemblies are installed, rotating field and exciter armature assembly must be dynamically balanced before reassembling.
  • The insulation test must be done with three exciter armature leads disconnected from rotating rectifier assembly, otherwise rectifiers could be damaged.

Procedure

  1. Exciter field: detach one lead; measure resistance to corresponding lead; compare with resistance limits table; repeat on CF if used.
  2. Rotating field coils: detach both alternator field leads at rotating rectifier assembly; measure total resistance; check insulation resistance between shaft and one detached lead.
  3. Alternator armature: blow out dirt; inspect insulation of coils and leads; check coils and insulators tight in slots; check insulation resistance.
  4. Exciter armature: detach all three leads at rotating rectifier; measure phase-to-phase resistance at armature terminals; each phase should be within limits.
