Before you start

  • NEVER use connecting rod cap screws more than once for final engine assembly.
  • Using pneumatic wrenches to install cap screws may cause damage to the threads.

Procedure

  1. Use JDE93 Ring Expander to install piston rings and oil control ring with expander ring; 'pip' marks on No. 1 and No. 2 rings face top of piston.
  2. Lubricate piston pin and bushing with clean engine oil.
  3. Install piston pin through piston and connecting rod; be sure front of rod aligns with front of piston.
  4. Install NEW piston pin snap rings in grooves; make sure they expanded in grooves.
  5. Stagger ring gaps on pistons.
  6. Coat pistons, liners, and ID of JDE96 Piston Ring Compressor with clean engine oil.
  7. Carefully place ring compressor with piston and rod over liner; word 'FRONT' faces front of engine.
  8. Push piston into liner with rings correctly staggered.
  9. Apply clean engine oil to bearing inserts and crankshaft rod journals.
  10. Install connecting rod caps.
  11. Dip NEW cap screws and washers in clean engine oil, including tops.
  12. Initially tighten one cap screw to 27 N·m (20 lb-ft) before tightening the other.
  13. Tighten all cap screws to 75 N·m (55 lb-ft).
  14. Finally TORQUE-TURN all cap screws 90—100°.
