John Deere — Engine Disassembly Sequence

Before you start

  • DO NOT damage option code label (if equipped), when removing rocker arm cover.

Procedure

  1. 1. Drain all coolant and engine oil. Check engine oil for metal contaminates.
  2. 2. Remove carburetor, throttle valve, and pressure regulator.
  3. 3. Remove turbocharger oil inlet and outlet line and coolant inlet and outlet lines.
  4. 4. Remove exhaust elbow and connector. Remove turbocharger.
  5. 5. Remove auxiliary water pump and brackets (if equipped). Remove alternator and mounting brackets.
  6. 6. Remove fan pulley and water manifold assembly.
  7. 7. Remove front crankshaft pulley and damper assembly.
  8. 8. Remove ignition wires and spark plugs.
  9. 9. Remove ignition control unit, coils, mounting plate, and spacer plate. Remove ignition timing sensor and plate.
  10. 10. If equipped, remove electronic governor, throttle actuator, speed sensor, and wiring harness.
  11. 11. Remove water pump.
  12. 12. Remove engine oil filter and oil conditioning housing.
  13. 13. Remove aftercooler and intake manifold assembly, and exhaust manifold.
  14. 14. Remove rocker arm cover and breather hose.
  15. 15. Remove rocker arm assembly and push rods. Identify parts for re-assembly.
  16. 16. Remove cylinder head. Remove head gasket.
  17. 17. On SAE No. 3 flywheel housings, remove flywheel then remove flywheel housing.
  18. 18. On SAE No. 1 and 2 flywheel housings, remove flywheel housing and then remove flywheel.
  19. 19. Remove oil pan and engine oil pump assembly.
  20. 20. Remove front timing gear cover.
  21. 21. Remove pistons and connecting rods. Identify for re-assembly. Perform wear checks with PLASTIGAGE.
  22. 22. Remove main bearing caps. Remove crankshaft and main bearings. Identify for re-assembly.
  23. 23. Remove camshaft and cam followers. Identify for re-assembly.
  24. 24. Remove liners and their O-ring seals. Mark liners for reassembly in same bore from which removed.
  25. 25. Remove piston cooling orifices.
  26. 26. Remove cylinder block plugs and engine serial number plate, if block is to be put in a 'hot tank'.
