John Deere 9.0 L Diesel Engines — Cylinder Head Cap Screw Torque Procedure

Repair & overhaul

For the John Deere 9.0 L Diesel Engines, from the John Deere service manual.

Applies to: John Deere 6090H engine

Before you start

  • ALWAYS use NEW cap screws when installing cylinder head; cap screws may be used only one time.
  • DO NOT use multi-viscosity oils to lubricate cap screws; SAE30 is recommended.
  • If a cap screw is accidentally tightened more than 90° in any one sequence, DO NOT loosen it; make adjustments in the next sequence.
  • Cap screws MUST NOT be tightened more than a total of 270° ± 5°.

Procedure

  1. Lubricate cap screws with clean SAE30 engine oil and install in their proper locations; arrow points toward front of engine.
  2. Tighten cap screw No. 17 to 80 N·m, then sequentially start at No. 1 and proceed through No. 26, tightening all to 80 N·m.
  3. Draw a reference line parallel to the crankshaft across the entire top of each cap screw head.
  4. Sequentially (No. 1 through No. 26) turn each cap screw 90°.
  5. Again sequentially turn each cap screw 90°.
  6. Finally, sequentially turn each cap screw 90° so the line is as close as possible to perpendicular to the crankshaft.
