Procedure

  1. 1. Always use an engine stand when taking the
  2. engine down from the vehicle.
  3. Do not place the engine directly onto the ground,
  4. or place in a manner that interferes with the oil
  5. pan.
  6. 2. If you are working together with others, always pay
  7. attention to each other's safety.
  8. 3. If you are repairing any part of the electrical sys-
  9. tem, always remove the minus side cable from the
  10. battery terminal before starting work. If you are
  11. removing the battery cover, always remove the
  12. cover in a place that is away from sources of fire/
  13. heat.
  14. 4. Do not perform painting work or leave the engine
  15. running for long periods of time in an enclosed or
  16. badly ventilated indoor workshop.
  17. 5. Always use the correct specialized tool indicated in
  18. the instructions. Using the incorrect tool may
  19. cause damage to the parts or injury to the person
  20. using the tool.
  21. 6. All regular tools, gauges and special tools should
  22. be regularly inspected, and prepared before start-
  23. ing work. Do not use bent spanners, hammers with
  24. damaged edges, chipped chisels, or any other
  25. faulty or damaged tools.

  28. 7. Always pay close attention to safety and handling
  29. requirements when using grinders, cranes, weld-
  30. ers, and other such equipment.
  31. Moreover, always wear the correct protective gar-
  32. ments and use the necessary safety tools for the
  33. job in hand.
  34. 8. Always check that there are no fuel leaks when
  35. performing maintenance work on the fuel system.
  36. (It may cause a fire.)
  37. 9. Pay close attention to the risk of ignition if you are
  38. handling parts that carry a high voltage.
  39. Furthermore, any oil or grease spilt onto rubber
  40. parts must be wiped off immediately, as it will
  41. cause deterioration of the rubber.
  42. Replacement parts and part numbers
  43. 1. Always replace packing, oil seals, O-rings, caulk-
  44. ing lock nuts, folding lock plates, split pins and
  45. other such parts with brand new parts.
  46. 2. The parts numbers contained in this manual may
  47. not represent the supply condition of the parts, and
  48. the part numbers may be changed due to revi-
  49. sions. Therefore, parts should always be checked
  50. against a parts catalogue before use.

  53. 0A-4 General Information
  54. Liquid gasket
  55. 1. Each time you disassemble parts that use liquid
  56. gasket, completely remove the old gasket residue
  57. from each of the parts and matching sections using
  58. a scraper, then clean each of the parts to com-
  59. pletely remove oil, water, and dirt etc. from the var-
  60. ious surfaces by a cloth. Using the specified type
  61. of liquid gasket, apply new liquid gasket to each of
  62. the surfaces before reassembling the parts.
  63. 2. In order to make it easier to clean liquid gasket sur-
  64. faces, apply gasket remover liquid (Pando- 391D
  65. made by ThreeBond Co., Ltd.) and leave the part
  66. to stand for approximately 10 minutes, after which
  67. the old liquid gasket residue will be easier to
  68. remove.
  69. However, this should not be used on resin compo-
  70. nents or painted components.
  71. 3. Please take care not to apply too much or too little
  72. liquid gasket.
  73. Also, you should always re-apply the liquid gasket
  74. upon itself when you start and finish application.
  75. 4. Make sure that there are no gaps when reinstalling
  76. the liquid gasket parts to each other. If there are
  77. gaps between the two parts, re-apply the liquid
  78. gasket. Some parts, especially the oil pan, use the
  79. same size studs as a guide to eliminate the need
  80. for knock pin positioning etc.
  81. 5. Re-install these parts within 5 minutes of applying
  82. the liquid gasket.
  83. If more than 5 minutes passes, remove the previ-
  84. ous liquid gasket and re-apply it.
  85. 6. Please wait for at least 30 minutes since the last
  86. part is installed before starting the engine.

  153. Application procedure
  154. 1. Wipe the contact surfaces clean of all water, oil or
  155. grease. The contact surfaces should be dry.
  156. 2. Apply a regular bead width of liquid gasket to one
  157. of the contact surfaces. Make sure that the bead
  158. does not break at this point.
  159. Note:
  160. If there are special regulations concerning the applica-
  161. tion procedure in the repair document, please follow
  162. those regulations.
  163. Work procedure
  164. 1. Wipe the joint surfaces of the bolt, bolt hole, and
  165. threads clean of water, grease, and oil. The con-
  166. tact surfaces should be dry.
  167. 2. Apply Loctite to the top 1/3 of the screw.
  168. 3. Tighten the bolt to the specified torque.
  169. Important:
  170. After tightening the bolt, do not apply excessive
  171. torque or try to rotate the bolt until at least one
  172. hour has passed, and the Loctite has hardened.
  173. Procedure for using the plastigauge
  174. Example: Procedure for measuring the clearance
  175. between the connecting rod bearing and crank pin.
  176. • Clean the connecting rod and bearing, and install
  177. the bearing to the rod.
  178. • Cut the plastigauge to the same width as the crank
  179. pin, and while avoiding the oil hole of the crank pin
  180. lay the gauge parallel to the pin.
  181. • Line up the marks on the connecting rod and cap,
  182. and install the crank pin. Apply molybdenum disul-
  183. fide to the thread section and seating surface of
  184. the tightening bolt, and rotate both cap and bolt to
  185. the correct torque.
  186. Important:
  187. Do not move the connecting rod while using the
  188. plastigauge.
  189. • Gently remove the cap and connecting rod, and
  190. measure the crushed width of the plastigauge
  191. (clearance between rod and pin) using the scale
  192. printed on the bag.
