Hercules — To Install the Connecting Rods
Repair & overhaul
From a Hercules owner's manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.
Before you start
- Do not file or grind the caps.
Procedure
- Assemble the connecting rod and piston and insert the retaining rings.
- Inspect the crankshaft for rough or scored marks; polish with an oil stone, fine emery cloth or Crocus cloth.
- Install the piston rings on the pistons.
- Select the proper piston and connecting rod assembly and turn the crankshaft to the correct position.
- Apply a liberal coat of lubricating oil to cylinder bores, pistons, rings and piston pin; space piston rings so no two slots are in line.
- With the piston rings compressed, force the piston and rings into the cylinder bore.
- With the piston in the bore, insert the upper shell and pull the connecting rod down to the crankshaft.
- Place a 1/4 x 1/4 x .003 inch piece of feeler stock in the cap; place lower shell in cap and assemble cap; tighten screws and try side movement.
- Remove the feeler stock, reassemble the cap, tighten the screws and again try side movement.
- Repeat for all connecting rods, then install the cotter pins.
