Hercules — Starting the Engine (First Time or After Long Shutdown)

Operation

From a Hercules owner's manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Never run the starting motor longer than 30 seconds at one time without a rest period of at least one minute.

Procedure

  1. Fill the fuel tank with suitable fuel.
  2. Fill the cooling system with clean, pure water, or an anti-freeze solution if below freezing.
  3. Fill the crankcase with suitable lubricating oil to the 3/4 or full mark on the oil gauge rod.
  4. Turn the engine over by hand crank three or four times to start oil circulation and distribute oil.
  5. Check lubrication of the generator, starter, fan, water pump and other accessories; check air cleaners.
  6. Check the entire electrical system for loose connections.
  7. See that no loose bars, tools or parts are lying on the engine.
  8. Never attempt to start with a wide-open throttle; open throttle not more than one-fifth of total opening.
  9. Turn the ignition switch to 'On' and start the engine by operating the starting motor switch.
