Hercules G-1600 — Voltmeter Test (Electronic Ignition Primary Circuit)

Testing & diagnosis · ignition system

For the Hercules G-1600, from the Hercules service manual.

Procedure

  1. Position trigger wheel so sensor is between 2 teeth (comparable to points closed).
  2. Turn on ignition switch and connect voltmeter across battery terminals (V-1); should read 12 to 13 volts; charge battery if low.
  3. Connect voltmeter between coil positive terminal and ground (V-2); should read within one volt of battery reading.
  4. Connect voltmeter between coil negative terminal and ground (V-3); should read 4 to 8 volts.
  5. Place a screwdriver in front of the sensor face; if V-3 indicates 12 to 13 volts, test coil or replace electronics.
  6. If V-3 is less than 4 volts, remove wire from coil negative terminal and reconnect V-3 to coil negative; 12-13V indicates electronics shorted.
  7. If V-3 is more than 8 volts, check distributor for a good ground; replace electronics if OK.
