General Motors — Replacing engine oil

Maintenance · Engine oil pan

From a General Motors operator's manual covering: 4.3L 262 CID, 4.3L V6, GMG-643. Check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • A badly contaminated or deteriorated oil should be replaced regardless of the replacement intervals.
  • Replace the oil filter element each time the oil is replaced.
  • Replace the oil on a new engine after the first 60 hours of operation.

Procedure

  1. After shutdown remove the oil while it is still hot; the oil filter should be replaced at the same time.
  2. Install the drain plug and pour fresh engine oil from the oil filler port up to the FULL mark on the level gauge.
  3. Run the engine at idle for several minutes then recheck the oil level.
