General Motors — Seal Ring in Front Camshaft Housing, Replace

Before you start

  • Important! Do not damage sealing surfaces.

Procedure

  1. Remove, Disconnect: Remove air cleaner housing with air intake cover.
  2. Remove upper part of toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Upper Part, Remove and Install".
  3. Remove ribbed V-belts - see operation "Ribbed V-belts, Remove and Install".
  4. Remove ribbed V-belt tensioner - see operation "Ribbed V-belt Tensioner, Remove and Install".
  5. Remove lower part of toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Lower Part, Remove and Install".
  6. Remove toothed belt - see operation "Toothed Belt, Remove and Install".
  7. Remove engine vent hose from camshaft housing cover.
  8. Detach wiring trough from camshaft housing cover.
  9. Remove camshaft housing cover from camshaft housing.
  10. Remove camshaft sprocket from camshaft - (hold with open-ended wrench on hex of camshaft).
  11. Edge out seal ring with suitable tool.
  12. Install, Connect: Lightly coat sealing lip of seal ring with silicon grease (white). Press seal ring with KM-422 in camshaft housing - use bolt and washer of camshaft pulley.
  13. Attach camshaft sprocket to camshaft - hold with open-ended wrench on hex of camshaft - tightening torque 45 Nm / 33 lbf.ft.
  14. Install camshaft housing cover at camshaft housing - tightening torque 8 Nm / 6 lbf.ft.
  15. Attach engine vacuum hose to camshaft housing cover.
  16. Install toothed belt - see operation "Toothed Belt, Remove and Install".
  17. Install lower part of toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Lower Part, Remove and Install".
  18. Install ribbed V-belt tensioner - see operation "Ribbed V-belt Tensioner, Remove and Install".
  19. Install ribbed V-belt - see operation "Ribbed V-belt, Remove and Install".
  20. Install upper part of toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Upper Part, Remove and Install".
  21. Install air cleaner housing with air intake cover.

Tools required

  • Seal installer KM-422

Specs & torque values

  • Tightening torque, camshaft sprocket: 45 Nm / 33 lbf.ft
  • Tightening torque, camshaft housing cover: 8 Nm / 6 lbf.ft
