General Motors — Engine Set-Up and Testing

Operation

From a General Motors service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Do not place sealant pellets into a non-pressurized coolant recovery reservoir; add to the radiator instead.

Procedure

  1. Fill the crankcase with the proper quantity and grade of oil; add Engine Oil Supplement if a new camshaft or lifters was installed.
  2. Fill the coolant system; add 2 coolant sealant pellets (crush prior to installation).
  3. With the ignition OFF or disconnected, crank the engine several times and listen for unusual noises.
  4. Start the engine and listen for unusual noises.
  5. Run the engine at about 1000 rpm until at operating temperature.
  6. Listen for improperly adjusted valves or sticking lifters.
  7. Check for oil and coolant leaks while the engine is running.
  8. Adjust ignition timing using the proper service manual or Emission Control Label.
