Before you start

  • On some 4.3L engines, the distance between rear main
  • bearing thrust faces is .008" (.20 mm) wider than
  • standard (identified by .008" stamped on crankshaft

Procedure

  1. Measure the rod bearing journal out-of-round, taper and the oil clearance. If
  2. Ensure rod side play is within specification. See CONNECTING RODS table under
  3. Mark bearing caps for reassembly. Measure journal diameter, out-of-round, taper and
  4. Align thrust bearing surfaces, and measure crankshaft end play. See THRUST
  5. Install main bearing caps (except rear), and tighten cap bolts to specification. See
  6. Tap crankshaft rearward then forward to align thrust surfaces. Tighten rear main

Specs & torque values

  • 10 ft. Ibs. 14 N.m).
  • bearings on these engines, use only .008" (.20 mm)
