General Motors — Distributor Replacement (HVS) - Installation Procedure 1

Installation · HVS Distributor

From a General Motors service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • If the MIL turns on after installing the distributor and a Fault Code sets, the distributor has been installed incorrectly

Procedure

  1. Use when the crankshaft has NOT been rotated from the original position
  2. Place two marks on the new distributor housing in the same location as the original
  3. Remove the new distributor cap if necessary and align the rotor with the mark at location 2
  4. Guide the distributor into the engine with the flat part facing the front of the engine
  5. Observe the rotor moving clockwise about 42 degrees while installing
  6. Verify rotor segment aligns with mark at location 1; if not, remove and reinstall distributor
  7. Install the distributor mounting clamp and hold down bolt snug, but not fully tightened
  8. Install distributor cap and two NEW distributor cap screws; tighten to 2.4 N·m (21 lb in)
  9. Install the electrical connector to the distributor
  10. Install the spark plug wires to the distributor cap
