General Motors — Checking/Filling Engine Oil Level

Maintenance

From a General Motors service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Applies to: General Motors 1.6L engine

Before you start

  • Overfilled crankcase (oil level too high) can cause an oil leak, oil pressure fluctuation or drop, and rocker arm clatter.

Procedure

  1. Stop engine if in use.
  2. Allow sufficient time (approximately 5 minutes) for oil to drain back into the oil pan.
  3. Remove the dipstick, wipe with a clean cloth, reinstall and push all the way in.
  4. Remove the dipstick and note the oil level.
  5. Oil level must be between the FULL and ADD marks.
  6. If below ADD, remove the oil filler cap from the valve rocker arm cover.
  7. Add the required amount of oil up to but not over the FULL mark.
  8. Reinstall the oil filler cap and wipe any excess oil clean.

Specs & values

  • Oil level must be maintained between the ADD and FULL marks on the dipstick
