General Motors — Checking Engine Crankcase Oil Level

Maintenance

From a General Motors owner's manual covering: Carb 5.7L, MP 5.0L, MP 5.7L, MP 6.0L. Check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • The machinery space must be closed anytime the engine is running to prevent injury
  • Do Not overfill engine crankcase with oil.

Procedure

  1. Stop the engine if running; allow approximately 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan.
  2. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, and reinstall it until within two inches of being fully seated.
  3. Slowly move the dipstick up and down approximately one-half inch several times, then fully seat it.
  4. Wait two minutes, remove the dipstick and observe the oil level; it must be between the FULL and ADD marks.
  5. Add specified oil if below ADD, or remove excess oil if above FULL.
