Maintenance · Engine lubrication system

From a General Motors owner's manual covering: Carb 5.7L, MP 5.0L, MP 5.7L, MP 6.0L. Check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Do not remove the oil filter bypass adapter when changing the oil.

Procedure

  1. With the engine at normal operating temperature, remove the dipstick and install a crankcase oil pump onto the dipstick tube; pump the oil out until the crankcase is empty.
  2. Remove the oil filter by turning it counterclockwise, using an oil filter wrench if necessary; discard the old filter and sealing ring.
  3. Coat the sealing ring on the new filter with clean engine oil; install the oil filter securely by hand; do not overtighten.
  4. Fill the engine with the recommended oil through the oil fill location on the valve cover.
  5. Start the engine and operate for 5 minutes to circulate the oil; check entire system for leaks.
  6. Stop the engine and wait 5 minutes, then check the oil level and adjust as needed.
