General Motors — Change the Engine Ignition Timing (30--60 kW models only)

Adjustments · Engine ignition / distributor

From a General Motors service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Before you start

  • Disable the generator set before working on it to prevent accidental starting.

Procedure

  1. Loosen the distributor hold-down clamp screw.
  2. Clean the crankshaft pulley groove and engine timing plate mark; highlight timing marks with chalk.
  3. Connect an ignition timing light per its manufacturer's instructions (no. 1 spark plug is front left of engine).
  4. Set the ignition timing light adjustment to 28° BTDC for LP gas vapor.
  5. Place the master switch in the RUN position to start the generator set.
  6. Point the timing light at the timing plate mark and slowly turn the distributor until the pulley groove aligns with the mark.
  7. Place the master switch in the OFF position to stop the generator set.
  8. Tighten the distributor hold-down clamp to 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.) without altering distributor position.
  9. Disconnect the ignition timing light from the engine.
