Adjustments · accessory drive belt

From a General Motors service manual — check it applies to your exact model before use.

Applies to: General Motors 1.6L engine

Before you start

  • Over tightening may cause overload on the bearings and pulleys of the drive belt components.
  • The engine manufacturer does not recommend the use of 'belt dressing' or 'anti slipping agents' on either belt configuration.

Procedure

  1. Check belt tension by pressing down on the midway point of the longest stretch between two pulleys.
  2. The belt should not depress beyond 13mm (1/2 inch).
  3. If depression is more than allowable, adjust the tension.
  4. Do not over tighten the belt tension.
