Before you start

  • Do not rotate the connecting rod or crankshaft while plastigauge is installed

Procedure

  1. Remove oil and dirt from rod bearing and from crankpin
  2. Cut a length of plastigauge to the same length as the width of the bearing
  3. Place plastigauge on the crankpin parallel with the crankshaft
  4. Assemble the connecting rod bearing and cap to the crankpin
  5. Tighten to 22-25 foot-pounds (3.0-3.5 m-kg)
  6. Remove the connecting rod and bearing
  7. Use the plastigauge scale to measure the oil clearance in the widest area

Specs & torque values

  • Tightening torque: 22-25 foot-pounds (3.0-3.5 m-kg)
  • Standard clearance: 0.001-0.003 inch (0.35-0.83mm)
