Before you start

  • Timing chain procedures must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result.
  • Do not compress the ratchet assembly. This will damage the ratchet assembly.
  • The camshaft sprocket can jump time if the Camshaft Holding Tool is not secured.
  • Mating parts must make contact within 4 minutes and connecting bolts must be torqued within 15 minutes after applying sealant.

Procedure

  1. Compress the tensioner plunger using an edge of a vise. Do not compress the ratchet assembly.
  2. Push back and hold the ratchet mechanism with a small screwdriver or pick; push the ratchet arm back into the tensioner housing.
  3. Install a paper clip into the hole in the tensioner housing to hold the ratchet assembly and plunger.
  4. If copper links are not visible, mark two links on one end and one link on the other end to use as timing marks.
  5. Install the timing chain guides.
  6. Remove the Crankshaft Holding Tool. Install the inner crankshaft sprocket with the long hub facing outward.
  7. Install the inner timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket with the timing marks aligned.
  8. Install the outer crankshaft sprocket and timing chain with the long hub facing inward.
  9. Position the timing chain on the camshaft sprocket and align the two copper-colored links with the camshaft sprocket timing mark.
  10. Check for proper alignment of all timing marks.
  11. Position the LH and RH timing chain tensioner arms on the dowel pins; position the tensioners and install the bolts.
  12. Remove the retaining pins from the RH and LH timing chain tensioners.
  13. Remove the Camshaft Holding Tools. Install the crankshaft sensor ring on the crankshaft.
  14. Lubricate the balance shaft journals with engine oil; position the balance shaft on the journals and align the balance shaft timing marks.
  15. Lubricate the bearing caps with engine oil; install the bearing caps and bolts and tighten in the sequence shown. Install the engine front cover.
