Before you start
- Toxic solvents - use in well-ventilated area
- DO NOT spin dry bearings
- Press ONLY on inner race of bearings
Procedure
- Clean intermediate and shaft with solvent-soaked cloth
- Inspect parts for wear and replace as necessary
- Inspect shaft for distortion, nicks, scratches
- Clean bearings in fresh solvent
- Dry bearings with compressed air and coat with light oil
- Rotate bearings by hand to check for roughness
- Pre-pack bearings with No. 0 lithium base grease
- Position bearing cones on shaft with high side toward lubrication cavity
- Press cones onto shaft until seated squarely
- Press bearing closure (21) and inboard bearing cup (19) into intermediate
- Slide shaft and bearing cones into intermediate bore
- Press outboard bearing cup (11) over outboard bearing cone (12)
- Install same thickness bearing adjusting shims (18) and secure with cap and hardware
