Ford — Shaft and Bearing Reassembly

Before you start

  • Toxic solvents - use in well-ventilated area
  • DO NOT spin dry bearings
  • Press ONLY on inner race of bearings

Procedure

  1. Clean intermediate and shaft with solvent-soaked cloth
  2. Inspect parts for wear and replace as necessary
  3. Inspect shaft for distortion, nicks, scratches
  4. Clean bearings in fresh solvent
  5. Dry bearings with compressed air and coat with light oil
  6. Rotate bearings by hand to check for roughness
  7. Pre-pack bearings with No. 0 lithium base grease
  8. Position bearing cones on shaft with high side toward lubrication cavity
  9. Press cones onto shaft until seated squarely
  10. Press bearing closure (21) and inboard bearing cup (19) into intermediate
  11. Slide shaft and bearing cones into intermediate bore
  12. Press outboard bearing cup (11) over outboard bearing cone (12)
  13. Install same thickness bearing adjusting shims (18) and secure with cap and hardware
