Before you start

  • Hold the output shaft while removing the snap ring so it does not fall out and cause injury.
  • Ford Motor Co. recommends replacing the output shaft snap ring.
  • Remove the output shaft from the rear side so it does not fall out and cause injury.

Procedure

  1. Remove forward ring gear and hub assembly along with the forward clutch (No. 6B) thrust washer.
  2. Remove and tag for I.D. the forward planet (No. 7) thrust bearing.
  3. Remove the forward planetary carrier assembly.
  4. Remove the input sun gear and shell assembly.
  5. Remove the low/reverse bearing spacer from inside the intermediate clutch pack.
  6. Install Special Tool 307-401 to compress the intermediate clutch return spring.
  7. Compress the intermediate clutch return spring and remove the flat retaining snap ring for intermediate clutch piston retainer.
  8. Remove Special Tool 307-401.
  9. Remove the intermediate piston retainer and piston assembly.
  10. Remove the complete intermediate clutch pack assembly.
  11. Remove and tag for I.D. the rear planetary thrust bearing (No. 8).
  12. Remove the rear planetary retaining snap ring from reverse drum.
  13. Remove the rear planetary carrier from the reverse drum.
  14. Remove the plastic lube dam from the rear planetary ring gear.
  15. Remove the output shaft retaining snap ring from the output shaft. Hold the output shaft while removing the snap ring.
  16. Remove the output shaft from transmission from the rear side so it does not fall out and cause injury.
  17. Remove and tag the rear ring gear number 9 thrust bearing for I.D.
  18. Remove the rear planetary ring gear from the transmission.
  19. Remove reverse drum and low sprag assembly by rotating and lifting drum out.
  20. Remove and tag the number 10 thrust bearing for I.D.
  21. Remove the low/reverse band assembly from the case.

Tools required

  • Special Tool 307-401

Specs & torque values

  • Forward planet thrust bearing (No. 7)
  • Intermediate clutch piston retainer snap ring
  • Output shaft snap ring
