Before you start

  • Bearings must be kept free of all dirt and foreign material.
  • DO NOT spin dry bearings.
  • When installing bearings NEVER press or hit against the roller or roll cage; press ONLY on the inner race.
  • When installing bearing cups push against the outer race.

Procedure

  1. Clean the intermediate, shaft and all component parts (except bearings) with a soft cloth soaked in cleaning solvent.
  2. Inspect the parts for wear or damage and replace as necessary.
  3. Inspect the shaft for distortion, nicks, scratches or thread damage; dress small nicks and burrs with a fine file or emery cloth.
  4. Clean the bearings thoroughly in fresh cleaning solvent, dry with filtered compressed air and coat with light oil.
  5. Rotate the bearings by hand to check for roughness or binding; replace if rotation is rough or rollers are discolored.
  6. Pre-pack the bearings by hand with No. 0 lithium base grease.
  7. Position the inboard and outboard bearing cones on the impeller shaft with the high side toward the lubrication cavity and press until seated.
  8. Press the bearing closure (21) and inboard bearing cup (19) into the intermediate.
  9. Slide the shaft and assembled bearing cones into the intermediate bore and press the outboard bearing cup (11) over the outboard bearing cone (12).
  10. Install the same thickness of bearing adjusting shims (18) and secure with the bearing cap (15) and hardware (16 and 17).
