Before you start

  • Improper jump start cable connections can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury.
  • Both batteries or sets of batteries must have the same voltages. Do not mix voltages.

Procedure

  1. Turn the start switch on the stalled engine to the OFF position. Turn off all accessories.
  2. Connect one positive cable end to the positive terminal of the discharged battery and the other positive end to the positive terminal of the charging or starting source.
  3. Connect one negative cable end to the negative terminal of the charging or starting source and the other to the stalled engine block or chassis ground.
  4. Charge the batteries. The engine will not continue to run after starting if the batteries have not been charged.
  5. Start the engine.
  6. Immediately after the stalled engine is started, disconnect the jump start cables in reverse order.
